.frequently asked questions.
What kind of wax is used in your candles ?
The candles are made from 100% EcoSoya(tm) wax
What are the advantages of soya wax over paraffin and palm ?
Soya wax is made with natural renewable sustainable ingredients - soybeans! The raw materials that make up EcoSoya(tm) waxes are from North America and are grown in a temperate climate from sustainable sources. Palm oil contributes to the destruction of tropical rainforests and wildlife habitats. (FYI, There are eco-friendly palm waxes out there, so if you do wish to buy a palm wax candle please ensure the producer of the oil is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). Paraffin, the most common candle wax for more than 100 years, is a highly refined petroleum product. The detrimental global environmental effect of petrochemical products shouldn't need any further explanation here.
Other benefits of soya wax:
+ Longer, cooler and cleaner burning without soot buildup
+ Biodegradable and free from pesticides and herbicides
+ Do not contain Genetically Modified Material
+ Easy to clean up with soap and warm water
Is EcoSoya(tm) organic ?
There is no such thing as organic soya candle wax due to the hydrogenation process that by necessity involves chemicals. If someone is claiming to be selling organic soya wax candles ask them to prove it!
Can I add my own essential oil ?
The candles have been left unfragranced so they can be enjoyed with food. If you wish, once the candle has been going a short while you may (carefully!) add a few drops of your favourite essential oil or blend of oils to the molten wax around the wick (what's known as the "burn pool").
Refillable candles - how does that work ?
If you live in London, please return your teacup to Unpackaged on Amwell Street EC1 and it will be refilled with a new candle. In fact, the first refill's on me :-)
I have my grandma's old tea service - can you turn it into candles ?
Of course. I would love to discuss any special commissions anyone has in mind - please e-mail me. In particular an old family set of china would just be stunning for a special occasion such as a wedding or christening - teacup candles brightly burning with cupcakes on the co-ordinating cake plates! As soya wax washes off completely with soap and warm water the teacups may be easily returned to their original use.
Note - please read the following candle safety instructions:
+ Always place candles well away from curtains, furniture and drapes and always out of draughts
+ Candles can become very hot and can burn through wooden surfaces, always place on a suitable level surface and never place on top of the television
+ Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets
+ Never leave a burning candle unattended
+ Keep candles away from hair and clothing
+ Always make sure that candles are properly extinguished, especially before going to bed
REMEMBER - CANDLES CAN CAUSE FIRES AND INJURY WHEN MISUSED
